Challenge:

    Kanda Consulting were employed to help Almacantar develop masterplan proposals for the future of Puddle Dock and Baynard House, a large site dominated by roads and hard infrastructure within the Blackfriars key area of change. The site is adjacent to Blackfriars Station and located in the setting of St Paul’s Cathedral.

    Because the development will be significant and have a major impact in the City, we needed to make sure we were capturing all the voices we needed to. However, audiences in the City can be challenging to engage with in-person, as they are largely dominated by workers.

    Action:

    We developed a targeted hybrid solution across social media and in-person engagement, to maximise outreach and ensure extensive participation in helping to shape the masterplan.  This included targeted social media activity and undertaking in-person engagement in high footfall areas. For example, we developed a consultation website, designed and distributed newsletters, and held pop-up consultations at the Blackfriars Station forecourt.

    Result:

    This approach saw more than 1,000 commuters engaged with, as well as some of the highest metrics achieved through a social media campaign undertaken by Kanda, including reaching over 75,000 people, securing nearly 430,000 impressions resulting in 18,000 clicks; with nearly 9,000 visits to the consultation website.

    The extensive engagement has helped to shape the Masterplan brief, encouraging greater diversity in the design of the seven proposed buildings on the site, giving further consideration to the public realm and curation of public benefits, including helping shape what will be the largest roof garden in the City of London.

    The approach has been commended by the City of London Corporation, and the consultation materials received positive feedback through the trade press, including the Estates Gazette.
