Kanda was asked to support proposals to develop a new academic building including lecture theatres and teaching rooms on the University of East London’s Stratford Campus on Water Lane, along with the creation of new student accommodation and improvements to the accessibility and permeability of the Campus through the opening up of pedestrian and cycling routes.

Kanda led the public consultation process and coordinated engagement between stakeholders across Stratford. This comprised proactive virtual and in-person methods to reach a wide range of people in an area that had previously demonstrated consultation/development fatigue.

Coordinating between various internal teams at UEL, Kanda advised on positioning within the borough and led a political outreach programme, including coordinating a royal visit in February 2023. Kanda introduced UEL to new community partners and led a campaign to build support for a package of local benefits delivered by the proposals.

The plans secured consent from Newham Council in February 2024.
