The second edition of The Green Boroughs Briefing
More than 100 days on from the 2026 local elections, London’s new Green administrations are beginning to show what their approach to governing looks like in practice. The Green agenda is extending beyond climate change.
Housing repairs, renters, local services and the cost of living are becoming increasingly prominent, while Green-led boroughs continue to challenge changes to London’s affordable housing policy.
The wider political landscape is changing too.
The report examines whether Andy Burnham’s more left-leaning Labour leadership could make it harder for the Greens to retain some of the progressive voters who moved away from Labour under Keir Starmer. Green figures are responding by drawing distinctions on issues including rent controls, wealth taxes, public ownership, oil and gas and Gaza. Polanski has also publicly used these policy areas to distinguish the Greens from Burnham’s government.
Planning Committee Watch
The report also includes our latest Planning Committee Watch, with a particular focus on Lambeth, where four Kanda-supported schemes were approved in September: Vauxhall Square, Citadel Place, 68–86 Clapham Road and 12–20 Wyvil Road. Across the decisions, members focused on affordable housing, viability, daylight and amenity impacts, sustainability and deliverability.
Holborn & St Pancras by-election
We look ahead to the Holborn & St Pancras by-election and what the contest could tell us about the development of Green support following the party’s gains in Camden in the local elections in May 2026.
