This morning Kanda hosted a breakfast discussion in partnership with Lambeth Council, tackling the big questions surrounding the delivery of new homes in the Borough.
We were joined by Cllr Claire Holland, Leader of the Council, and Cllr Danny Adilypour, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Growth and New Homes, who were in conversation with Karen Alcock for an insightful discussion about how to deliver the next generation of homes in Lambeth, and how strong partnerships between the Council and developers could help kickstart a new wave of housing delivery.
Cllr Danny Adilypour discussed Lambeth Council’s commitment to delivering new homes that were not only affordable, but also sustainable, with a commitment to net-zero targets. He stressed the importance of following design guidelines to meet the needs of the local community, and help reduce inequalities in Lambeth. Whilst Lambeth is committed to the delivery of affordable homes, they recognise the current viability challenges in the sector.
Cllr Claire Holland stressed the importance of a robust and rigorous planning process helping to ensure that community voices are heard and the necessary community benefits are realised, while also focusing on streamlining the process to increase the speed of the pipeline from submission to determination at planning committee. She emphasised Lambeth’s many fantastic qualities, and the importance local people put on being a welcoming, diverse and entrepreneurial borough.
Many thanks to Claire, Danny and to everyone who joined us this morning. This is very much the start of a longer conversation between the Lambeth leadership and developers, and we are pleased to have helped get this underway.
We would also like to thank Squire & Partners for hosting us at their brilliant space at The Department Store in Brixton.
