Kanda was appointed by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM) to carry out post-submission community engagement and planning committee support on the proposals for the redevelopment of Mapother House, Michael Rutter Centre, and the Professorial Building. These proposals will facilitate the investment required to transform their inpatient facilities at the Maudsley Hospital.
The proposed development includes:
- Around 187 new homes, with 50% affordable of which 70% socially rented and 30% intermediate homes
- Reproviding the existing nursery for staff onsite
- A new North-South link through the Maudsley Hospital Site to Denmark Hill Station, to improve connectivity in the area
- New landscaping and greenery
In Summer 2020, SLaM had undertaken a programme of engagement with staff and patients, councillors and officers from Southwark Council, local stakeholders and groups and residents, prior to the submission of the planning application.
Kanda was then brought on board to drive post-submission engagement. In response to the ongoing effect of the Covid-19 pandemic, this included a combination of virtual and physical consultation tools and activities.
Our engagement programme focussed on local residents who live near the site, as well as local community groups and ward councillors. Our comprehensive programme of post-submission engagement featured online community webinars, social media engagement, and newsletters.
Kanda was pleased to help guide SLaM through the process on the planning committee, as well as advising them and supporting them on the night.
Through a robust engagement programme, we were able to demonstrate a committed approach to engagement which resulted in Southwark’s Planning Applications Committee’s resolution to grant planning permission in October 2021.
