Mark is a very experienced senior politician and campaigner. Until May 2022 he was Leader of the London Borough of Merton, responsible for the overall direction of the council during the pandemic and for refocusing its strategic priorities after the worst was over. He has also held several other key positions, including Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, where he was responsible for budgets worth £500m a year. In addition, he has chaired the public-facing committee for the council’s housing company, Merantun Developments Limited, and was the public face of the council on TV, radio and in printed and digital communications.
Mark’s professional background is as a public affairs and communications consultant. Most recently, he has worked in the development and regeneration sector, advising a range of clients on how to campaign effectively for more housing and economic benefits for local communities. He has also advised a number of MPs and has a rare insight into the pressures on both local political representatives and the business community alike.
